Made up your mind and decided to travel to Flores and explore this adventurous, beautiful island? Great decision! Just make sure you’re well prepared and up-to-date about travel options to and from Flores island. Flores is one of the 17000+ islands of Indonesia and there are 34 (commercial!) airports in the whole of Indonesia’s archipelago. Traveling from island to island doesn’t have to be time consuming at all, especially if you prepare your trip in advance.
Flores counts 5 domestic, commercial airports with Komodo Airport (in Labuan Bajo town with airlines abbreviation ‘LBJ’) being the main airport of the island. Most tourists fly to Labuan Bajo to visit the Komodo National Park from here, which is only a 35 minute boat-trip from Labuan Bajo’s harbour. Besides Komodo Airport, two other main airports are Frans Xavier Seda Airport (Maumere/MOF) and H. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport (Ende/ENE). The airports in Labuan Bajo, Maumere and Ende operate daily and offer commercial flights with multiple airlines: Garuda, WingsAir, LionAir etc. Smaller airports, operating less consistently are Frans Sales Lega Airport (Ruteng/RTG), Bajawa Soa Airport (Bajawa/BJA) and Gewayantana Airport (Larantuka/LKA). Needless to say, lots of options to travel to Flores!
There are no international flights operating to Flores yet. To travel to Flores by plane means you always have to travel from a domestic airport. Within Flores it is possible to travel by plane as well. Even though there are available transits and connections, Go Indo suggests to consider partly travelling overland. In general the main road is asphalted and good, although there are smaller bumpier roads as well. Because Flores is a very mountainous island, be prepared for curves and hairpin bends. Along the road are plenty of breathtaking views and amazing places to stay. Don’t miss out on the beautiful scenery and countryside and travel by car, bus or motorbike.
